After shrugging off a challenge from 2022 Breeders Crown champion Ammo, Water Sports Teen repelled a late threat from Business Director to spring a 7-1 upset in Monday's $14,583 Open Handicap Pace at Rosecroft Raceway.
William Carter secured the lead with Water Sports Teen immediately at the race's outset and the pair clicked off early splits of :26.2 and :55 before 3-5 favourite Ammo (Jonathan Roberts) moved first-over from third to force a :27.3 third sectional and Business Director (Russell Foster) slid second-over. After Water Sports Teen dismissed that rival, Business Director continued his ascent uncovered turning for home but could only manage to get within a half length of Water Sports Teen's victorious 1:50.3 mile. Better Take It (Johnathan Ahle) circled three-wide from deeper back to narrowly nab Ammo for third.
Darren Ferrell owns and trains Water Sports Teen, a six-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding who has won four times this season in 28 starts and 18 times in his career.
Justin Walters led all drivers with three wins on the 13-race card.
Live harness racing at Rosecroft resumes on Wednesday, Nov. 6, featuring a Mares Open Pace, carded as race 11, and an $11,452 carryover in the Jackpot Hi-5, offered in race 10. First post for the 13-race card is 7:40 p.m.
