Richard Moreau trainee Wheels On Fire found his way back into the winner’s circle of the $34,000 Preferred Pace on Saturday (Nov. 27) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The six-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding waited until after a :27 first quarter to make his move for the top, swooping out of third to seize command with the tempo slowed to a :56.1 half. Once on the lead, Wheels On Fire cruised around the final turn as Beyond Better ripped out of fourth to blitz the pacesetter to three-quarters in 1:24.2. With pocket-sitter Uhtred then joining the fray in the straightaway battle, Wheels On Fire kept all his challengers at bay to win by three-quarter lengths in 1:51.1. Uhtred took second, Beyond Better finished third and Sweet Deisel grabbed fourth.
Owned by Brad Grant, Wheels On Fire won his 11th race from 24 starts this season and his 33rd from 92 overall, pushing his earnings to $621,203. Doug McNair drove the $4.80 winner.
