Jailhouse Sam Speeds At Dayton

Published: November 24, 2021 08:29 pm EST

Jailhouse Sam, with trainer Hugh "Sandy" Beatty in the sulky, jetted out and led a field of Open trotters on a futile chase at Hollywood Dayton Raceway on Wednesday (Nov. 24).

The seven-year-old Victory Sam gelding, who has earned over a half-million dollars in his stellar career, left alertly from the gate and fronted the field the entire mile, except for a sixteenth of a mile when runner-up Pass The Vape got a brief half-length advantage on him as the pair neared the three-quarter pole. Thunder closed quickest of all to garner the show money.

With fractions of :27, :56.3, 1:25 and a final clocking of 1:53.3, Jailhouse Sam came within a second of his lifetime best taken last year. He has spent the entire 2021 season competing favourably with stalwarts like Mission Accepted, Refined and Whata Swan, all of whom were absent on this occasion, making the task of winning a little less daunting.

Bred and owned by Casey Clemens of Malta, Ohio, the winner has spent his entire career in the Beatty Stable, winning 32 times and banking $519,447.

Hollywood Dayton will be dark on Thursday (Nov. 25) for Thanksgiving, but will resume live racing with Friday (Nov. 26) and Saturday (Nov. 27) programs beginning at 4 p.m. (EST).
