Despite being asked to do the first-over work in Thursday’s featured tilt at Flamboro Downs, Utopia dug down deep for driver Billy Davis, Jr. and delivered a gutsy score in the $11,000 Preferred 2 for trotters.
Davis got away fourth from Post 2 with Utopia, who watched race favourite Ole Jack Magic march to the lead and supply splits of :29, :59.1 and 1:28.1. Utopia came first-over on that foe as the field neared the half, and they battled all the way to the wire. Utopia’s :29.3 closing quarter earned him the win by a head over Ole Jack Magic in 1:58 over a track rated ‘good’ with one-second allowance. Third prize went to Delcrest Massy.
Richard Moreau trains the five-year-old son of Mutineer-Brontease for 9099 3822 Quebec Inc of Sorel, QC and GAAR Racing Stables of North York, Ont. The gelding improved this year’s record to 6-6-3 from 26 attempts. The 12-time winner has banked more than $160,000 to date.
