Reports from Illinois indicate that the former Balmoral Park could once again play host to horse racing after plans for another racino in the state fell through earlier this year.
According to an article published Thursday in the Chicago Tribune, the current owner of the Balmoral Park property, New York-based horse show company HITS, has reached an agreement to sell the property to local developer Phil Goldberg.
“Balmoral Park is one of the crown jewels of Chicagoland, and our plans include returning it to its former glory and creating a premier sports, event and entertainment destination,” Goldberg said.
Plans for Balmoral Park, located just outside Chicago in Crete, would include expanded gaming along with harness racing to create a racino-style destination. The facility currently hosts equestrian shows and events.
Earlier this year, officials announced plans for a new racetrack through the sale of state land in Tinley Park. Those plans were nixed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker when reports indicated that the developer in that project had longstanding business ties to a banking family with reputed connections to organized crime.
