Driver Jonathan Drury could not get Major Hill to the pylons, but despite the overland mile the Carmen Auciello trainee hit the finish first in the $8,500 Horses & Geldings Preferred 3 Pace on Sunday (Nov. 22) at Flamboro Downs.
Away from post 7, Major Hill floated into fifth while Champagne Phil led the field to the quarter in :27.3. As the tempo slowed, Major Hill advanced towards the leader passing a :57.2 half and drew closer to the pacesetter passing three-quarters in 1:26.3. Off the turn Champagne Phil clung to a diminishing lead as Major Hill inched closer, managing to edge a nose in front to win in a 1:57.1 mile. Pocket-sitter Toot Toot N, the 6-5 favourite, took third.
Owned by Percy Elkins, Major Hill won his sixth race from 36 starts this season and his 23rd from 191 overall, earning $467,246. He paid $15.10 to win.
