Illinois' $90 Million Purse Subsidy Secured

The Illinois senate recently voted 37-13 in favour of legislation ensuring the state's horse racing industry will keep a $90 million subsidy from Illinois casinos. The monies are to be paid out over the next three years -- $30 million annually.

The Illinois house also passed the plan by a vote of 88-16.

The house and senate approval means that three per cent of the revenues generated by Illinois' richest casinos will go to the racing industry.

"This keeps the business viable and jobs in Illinois," Rep. Robert Molaro was quoted as saying in an article by the Chicago Sun-Times. "And there couldn't be a better time to keep these 30,000 to 50,000 jobs than now."

Rep. Jim Durkin was one that voted against the legislation, and he presented some very logical comments.
