A white paper in New Jersey penned in part by Rutgers Equine Science Center Director Dr. Karyn Malinowski has been released. The white paper concludes by recommending that the state’s horse racing and casino gaming industries should unite in order to remain sustainable or else both will fall to the competition they face from competing neighbouring states.
As a report by nj.com explains, Dr. Malinowski penned the ‘2014 State of the New Jersey Horse Racing Industry: Post Report of the Governor's Advisory Commission on New Jersey Gaming, Sports and Entertainment’ along with Rutgers Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics Chair Dr. Paul Gottlieb.
The white paper explains how the state’s Standardbred and Thoroughbred industries have been suffering, but that Atlantic City casinos have also been suffering quite badly. The paper cites the successful ‘racino’ models from neighbouring states, and how those racinos are directly eating away at the viability of New Jersey’s horse racing and casino industries.
