Dismissed at 19-1, Slick Artist A overtook Crisp Mane in deep stretch to spring the upset in Wednesday’s $19,300 Filly & Mare Open Handicap Pace at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows.
After cutting a comfortable :57.2 front half, Crisp Mane appeared uncatchable. But when Ridge Warren angled Slick Artist A off the cones from third into the final turn, the eight-year-old daughter of Art Major-Slick Bird accelerated quickly and downed Crisp Mane by a half-length in 1:53.2 over a 'good' surface. Irish Daydream finished third.
Gerald Lee Jr. owns and trains Slick Artist A, who lifted her lifetime bankroll to $322,540.
It was one of four wins for Warren on the 12-race card, giving him eight over the past two days.
Live harness racing at The Meadows continues Thursday when the 12-race program features a trio of carryovers: $1,791.16 in the Early Pick 4 (Race 1); $1,496.44 in the final-race Jackpot Super Hi-5; $494.38 in the Jackpot Pick 5 (Race 4). First post is 12:45 p.m.
