Son Of Anarchy pulled off a 13-1 upset with trainer/driver Paul Davies as he out-sprinted favourite Get Thereovernight down the stretch to win the co-featured $50,000 Jim Vinnell Memorial for Open pacers on Sunday at Fraser Downs. Sing Like An Angel won the companion $50,000 stakes final for aged pacing mares as the race favourite in a matching time of 1:53.3 for trainer/driver Travis Cullen.
Son Of Anarchy settled away seventh early in the Vinnell while insider Chewy Baca (Travis Bowman) established the lead with Beren Hanover (Allan Molloy) and Sterling Cooper (Bill Davis) battling three-wide through a :27 opening panel.
Sterling Cooper persisted outside of Chewy Baca as they raced to the half in :55.2 with Beren Hanover dropping in behind for cover. Meanwhile, 6-5 favourite Get Thereovernight (Bill Tainsh Jr.) was third over and tipped wide with Son Of Anarchy following that move around the parked out early leavers.
Get Thereovernight edged past Chewy Baca while still in the three-path down the backstretch and cleared to command with Son Of Anarchy moving up next to challenge in a two-horse breakaway past the 1:24 three-quarters mark. Those two battled down the stretch with Son Of Anarchy prevailing over Get Thereovernight by three-quarters of a length in 1:53.3. Life Signature (Brandons Campbell) finished four and a half lengths behind in third.
Overlooked by the betting public despite winning his Vinnell elimination in a career-best 1:53.2 effort last week, Son Of Anarchy paid $28.90 to win.
The four-year-old Driven To Win gelding notched is ninth win in 26 starts this year and bumped his bankroll over $80,000. He is owned by Lorne Duffield of Edmonton and Diane Harries of Falun, Alta.
Sing Like An Angel made her winning move in front of the grandstand in the mares division and swept from third to first before drawing off by five and a half lengths for Cullen, his mother Jodie and co-owners Keith and Margaret Hannah of Waskada, M.B.
Party Hangover Two (Steve Wiseman) cleared stablemate Part Time Lady (Paul Davies) at the :27.4 first quarter mark and led the way to the half in :57.1 before being overtaken by Sing Like An Angel.
The 7-5 favourite was flushed first over with Phone Terror (Serge Masse) on the move and she cleared to command down the backside before reaching three-quarters in 1:25.
Sing Like An Angel then sprinted the final quarter in :28.3 to extend her lead while Phone Terror chased her home in second-place. The five-year-old Bettors Delight mare paid $4.90 to win. Prairie Illusion (Kevin Anderson) finished back in third.
Sing Like An Angel is now 16-for-25 this season and boasts earnings of $128,735.
