The four-year-old Bettors Delight gelding Beyond Better survived a first-over grind to post a 1:53 win in the $34,000 Preferred Handicap Pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday (Nov. 13).
Driver James MacDonald landed the Bob McIntosh trainee in fourth while 6-5 favourite Wheels On Fire carved a :27.2 first quarter. MacDonald moved Beyond Better off the pegs into a :57.2 half and began to advance towards the lead to three-quarters in 1:26. Just one length off Wheels On Fire turning for home, Beyond Better made easy work of taking over the lead through the straightaway and coasted clear to a 1-1/2-length win at the beam. Uhtred gave chase to finish third while Speedy Dominic A, sitting a pocket trip, faded to fourth.
Owned by Robert McIntosh Stables Inc., Dave Boyle and Mardon Stables, Beyond Better won his seventh race from 22 starts this season and his 13th from 38 overall, pushing his earnings to $218,260. He paid $7.50 to win.
