Driver Travis Cullen made five visits to the winner’s circle on Sunday night (Nov. 13) at Flamboro Downs, including after a win in the $13,000 Preferred Trot with Arrakis.
Arrakis settled for a pocket trip while pylon-starter Sicario set a :27.4 first quarter and endured first-over pressure from favourite Gold Edition, who failed to find a spot to sit at the cones. Gold Edition continued to pester Sicario through middle fractions of :57.4 and 1:27.2 before retreating, and Sicario turned for home still with energy in the tank. But Arrakis zipped through the open stretch and by Sicario with ease to score a half-length win in 1:58 over late-closing Run Like Hill. Sicario took third and Power And Grace closed for fourth.
Francis Guillemette owns and trains Arrakis, a 10-year-old gelding by Federal Flex. He won his 38th race from 246 starts and has now earned $531,670. He paid $8.20 to win.
Cullen’s win in the Preferred came in the middle of a natural grand slam the reinsman started with a win by Als Warrior (2:02.2 winning mile, $6.50 to win) two races prior. He then won with Big Mach N (1:57, $2.20) and later with Hes Got Swagger (1:56, $3.40). Cullen capped the “five bagger” with a win in the nightcap by Highborn (1:57.3, $29.90).
