With a name like On The Ropes you’d expect to see a struggling horse, but that certainly isn’t the case for the white hot Carmen Auciello trainee who extended his winning streak to four in the Monday evening feature at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
On The Ropes got away fourth in the $25,000 trotting tilt for driver Sylvain Filion while Royal Witch sprinted to the lead and carved out fractions of :28.1 and :58.3 over the snow-covered oval. On The Ropes commenced a first-over rally on the way to the half, and he marched to the lead around the final turn. He took the field past the three-quarter pole in 1:28.4 and then used a :28.1 closing panel to win by a half-length margin over B Yoyo in 1:57. Free Willy Hanover was third.
Percy Elkins of Milton, Ont. owns the four-year-old son of Chapter Seven-Rs Giggles who now owns a 4-3-2 record from 17 starts this season. The nine-time winner has stashed away earnings in excess of $160,000.
