A compact group of four trotters faced the starting gate in Monday’s $34,000 Preferred Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park, and the lone mare in the field beat the boys.
Hey Livvy is her name, and trotting was her game in the top trot class offered at the Campbellville oval. The talented, yet temperamental, trotting lass landed third in the early going for driver/co-owner Trevor Henry while Perfetto grabbed the lead and laid down an opening quarter clocked in :27.4.
Henry had Hey Livvy on the move in the backstretch, though, and she muscled her way to the top on the way to the half. She led the group past the mid-way point in :55.4 and then trotted them past the three-quarter pole in 1:23.4. Even-money favourite Oney Hall was first over at that point, but that one ducked in coming off the final turn and made a costly miscue. That left it to Hey Livvy to finish them off with a final quarter clocked in :28.3. She won by a half-length margin over the late-driving Perfetto. Third prize went to the rallying Dream Nation.
Hey Livvy, a six-year-old daughter of Donato Hanover-Nevis Bi, improved her 2021 record to 3-1-0 from seven attempts for Henry, trainer/co-owner Jeff Gillis and partners Ellen Ott and Blue Chip Bloodstock. The 24-time winner pushed her overall cash stash over $500,000 with the win.
