Preferred regular So Much More and driver James MacDonald defeated the pari-mutuelly popular distaffers in this week's $32,000 top filly and mare affair featured on Friday night (October 9) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Coming off a runner-up finish in the Milton Stakes two weeks ago, Lit De Rose (Louis-Phillipe Roy) was able to overcome her outside post position in the Fillies & Mares Preferred Handicap Pace, leaving from the nine-hole and clearing to command ahead of Kendall Seelster (Jody Jamieson) at the :27 quarter mark.
The 5-2 second choice led the way to the half-mile mark in :55.2 and three-quarters in 1:23.2, with pressure mounting from even-money favourite Philly Hanover (Doug McNair), a sub-1:50 winner last Saturday night who advanced first-up from fifth here.
But it was the late-closing So Much More, positioned third-over behind gapped cover entering the final turn, who got up in time to win by a neck in 1:51.3. Lit De Rose held on for second over Philly Hanover.
Sent postward as the 5-1 third pick after closing for fifth-place in the Milton, So Much More returned $12.90 to win.
She recorded her seventh Preferred victory of the year and is now 8-4-4 in 23 seasonal starts.
The four-year-old Big Jim mare, who boasts 27 career wins and more than $468,000 in purse earnings, is owned by trainer Don Beatson along with partners Kenneth Beatson and Cole England.
