Sharp Debut For Saundra

It was a late start to the season for two-year-old trotting filly Saundra, but it looks like she is one that might prove to be worth the wait.

She made her pari-mutuel debut in a $15,000 conditioned event Thursday evening at Woodbine Mohawk Park, and she passed that test with flying colours for driver Sylvain Filion and trainer Shane Weber.

Filion got away second with the daughter of Resolve-World Class Image, but they didn’t sit for long. Silver Diamond sliced out the first quarter in :29, but Filion marched his charge to the top in the backstretch and once they cleared they easily carved out middle splits of :58.4 and 1:28.4 before charging home in :28.4 to win by 3-3/4 lengths over Magic Maggie in 1:57.3.

Saundra is a homebred owned by Tom and Beth Rankin of St. Catharines, ON. They’ve also enjoyed success with a number of the filly’s siblings including R First Class (1:52.3 - $495,875) and R Raised Emotions (1:52.3 - $121,934).
