Sent the 7-5 favourite, Musical Rhythm ventured first over and held off a rush from Odds On Amethyst to take the $34,000 Preferred Trot on Saturday, October 7 at Mohawk Racetrack.
Getting away fourth, Musical Rhythm sat off a :27 opening quarter set by Major Athens, who later lost the lead to Dia Monde brushing to the top into the backstretch. After a :56.3 half, Musical Rhythm angled wide, marching uncovered towards Dia Monde to take a narrow lead at three-quarters in 1:25. Odds On Amethyst, riding the rail, trotted into contention late, cutting into Musical Rhythm's one-and-a-half length lead at the head of the stretch. He came within a head of victory, while Dia Monde was relegated to third.
Musical Rhythm, a five-year-old son of Cantab Hall, out of the Valley Victory mare Musical Victory, won his sixth race in 17 starts this season and his 27th in 61 overall, collecting $632,368 for owners Santo and Nunzio Vena, Claude Hamel, and trainer Benoit Baillargeon. Driven by Mario Baillargeon, he paid $4.80 to win.
