The five-day Lexington Selected Yearling Sale concluded on Saturday night at the Fasig-Tipton Sale Pavilion in Lexington, Kentucky with Kapow earning the highest bid of the final session.
Kapow, Hip 653, topped the fifth session with a final bid of $70,000. Consigned by Hunterton Sales Agency, the Conway Hall-Zing colt was purchased by Pat Waldo, agent for Richard Gutnick.
A total of 94 yearlings were sold during the fifth session for $1,309,000, resulting in an average price of $13,926. Last year's average for the fifth sale day was $11,694.
The average price for this year's entire five-day auction, which featured 647 yearlings selling for $28,520,000, was up from 2013 at $44,080. During last year's sale, 687 yearlings passed through the sales ring, selling for almost $27.4 million and producing an average of $39,857.
This year's overall sale toppers were Bene Bene and Prince De Vie, who each sold for $400,000 during the opening session on Tuesday night.
Bene Bene, Hip 75, was a $400,000 purchase -- the highest price ever paid for an Ontario-sired trotter -- by the partnership of Mel Hartmann, Marvin Katz and David McDuffee. The Kadabra-Pizza Dolce filly, who was consigned by Hunterton Sales Agency, is the full-sister to OSS star Miss Paris (1:54.2 - $865,160) and Bella Dolce (1:54.2 - $730,384).
Prince De Vie, Hip 5, was purchased by agent Myron Bell for $400,000. The Cantab Hall-Dream Angel colt is the full-brother to Oasis Dream (1:53.4 - $221,961). He was consigned by Preferred Equine Inc.
