A wet and dreary night on Saturday (Oct. 30) at Woodbine Mohawk Park did not dampen the spirits of trainer Richard Moreau and driver Sylvain Filion.
Moreau's stable sent out four winners on the 11-race card and Filion ended the night with a total of five driving wins.
Moreau’s first victory came in the de facto feature, a $30,000 conditioned pace, with Wheels On Fire in 1:51.2. Driver Doug McNair motored the odds-on choice to the top from post six and led unchallenged through a clip of :27.4, :55.4 and 1:24.4 before sealing the deal by 2-1/2 lengths over fast-closing Sweet Deisel. Brad Grant owns the six-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding, who grabbed his 10th win on the season and his 32nd overall while upping his bankroll to $591,623. He paid $3.90 to win.
Moreau and Filion teamed up for three of their wins. In the middle of the card, the pair won back-to-back races. First, Twin B Sunkissed ($5.50) circled to the front after the quarter and led through the remainder of the mile to win a $22,000 conditioned pace then Chantee ($5.40) replicated that move in the following race, a $17,000 overnight event. They ended with a near wire-to-wire effort by Silver Maple ($5.50), who just held off a late charge from Take A Gamble by a neck.
Filion also drove Bestseller Hanover ($2.50) to victory for trainer Nick Gallucci in the opener and scored with the Herbie Holland-trained Rockin N Talkin ($7.10) in the 10th race.
