A trio of trotters lined up across the finish line in Thursday’s $11,000 Preferred 2 at Flamboro Downs, with Tornado Tim coming out on top for trainer/driver Danny O’Brian.
The seven-year-old son of Revenue S-Cyclone Annie survived a first-over trip to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:57.4.
Spartan Victory shot to the top from Post 7 and supplied the field with first-half fractions of :28 and :58.1 before being pressed by Tornado Tim in the backstretch. There wasn’t much separating those two at the three-quarter pole in 1:27.4, but Tornado Tim inched away in the closing strides to defeat a dead game Spartan Victory who wound up second. Winkys Pride was a lapped-on third in the seven-horse affair.
Sent off as the 2-1 favourite, Tornado Tim improved his 2014 record to 7-2-5 from 31 starts with the win. Everette Hanson of Maugerville, NB owns gelding who is just shy of $200,000 in lifetime earnings.
Two races earlier in the $7,000 Preferred 3 for trotters it was Dragin The Wagon going gate-to-wire for driver Anthony Haughan in 1:58.3.
The four-year-old son of Angus Hall-Bridgeannika sliced out splits of :29, :59.3 and 1:29 before using a :29.3 kicker to win by a quarter of a length over Valorscross. Race favourite Pasadena Star settled for the show dough.
James Cantelon, David Cantelon and Michael Cantelon share ownership on the gelding, who hangs his harness bag in the barn of trainer Jeff Byron. The victory was the ninth of the season and the 15th to date for the career winner of just under $80,000.
