Maine Horsepeople Against Casino

Even though the State of Maine's harness racing industry would be set to gain from the implementation of a proposed casino in Oxford County, horsepeople in the state are reportedly against the plan

.

According to a report by the Maine Public Broadcasting Network, Maine Harness Horsemen's Association Executive Director Chandler Woodcock has vocalized his displeasure for the plan.

"This Oxford casino project threatens the future of our industry by restricting other projects, which may include a harness racing facility as part of their proposal," Woodcock was quoted as saying.

The report explains that state law currently prohibits any Maine gaming facility from opening within 100 miles of an existing one. The owners of the Scarborough Downs harness racetrack had previously announced that they would like to relocate, rebuild and include slot machines in Biddeford. If the Oxford casino were to be implemented, the Biddeford project would be a no-go, as Biddeford is within a 100-mile radius of Oxford County.
