Freemans Legacy made the most of a pocket trip by shooting up the pylons down the stretch to win the $6,600 Winners Over Pace on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at Summerside Raceway.
The inside three of the four-horse group blasted in unison off the gate and charged to a :27.2 opening panel with rail starter Sauble Attack (Ken Murphy) all out to secure command. Freemans Legacy dropped into the two-hole after pressing the leader onto the backstretch, and 3-5 favourite Air Force Hanover (Gilles Barrieau) took back to third.
After a :56.3 half, Air Force Hanover was flushed out by Brookdale Johnny (Paul Langille) as they came off the third turn, and he went to battle with Sauble Attack through three-quarters in 1:26.1. Jaycob Sweet held Freemans Legacy to the cones around the last bend, then produced the gelding to the passing lane and sent him through to a 1-1/4-length victory in 1:55.4. Sauble Attack hung on for second over the closing Brookdale Johnny.
Jaycob Sweet trains Freemans Legacy, who upped his campaign total to nine wins in 23 starts for owner Mackenzie Arsenault of Alberton, P.E.I. The five-year-old son of Pang Shui-Camco Terra is now 21-for-76 lifetime with $78,996 in bankroll. He paid $5.30 to win.
Ken Murphy and Paul Langille each recorded driving triples on the 14-dash program.
Murphy closed out the evening with Twin Turbo Diesel ($15.50), who rallied to win in 1:59.2 for trainer Joe Baxter of Kensington, P.E.I., who shares ownership with Marion, Joanne and Jenna Stewart of Albany, P.E.I. Murphy also scored with Somewhere Racey ($5.40) in 2:00.1 for trainer Jeff Wallace of Elmsdale, P.E.I., who co-owns with Jeremy Doucette of Millcove, P.E.I., along with Doncic ($8.50) in 1:56.3 for trainer Ralph Sweet and owners David and John Sweet of O'Leary, P.E.I.
Langille's triple included Mattnificent Rose ($3), who won in 1:57.2 for trainer Luke Burke and owners Rebecca Horton of Milton Station, P.E.I., Jessie Brewer of Martock Windsor, N.S. and Blair MacLauchlan and Jeff Lilley of Charlottetown, P.E.I. He also guided Applepiemoonshine ($6.50) to a 2:01.1 victory for trainer Kyle Marchbank and owner Macy Sorrie of Tyne Valley, P.E.I., and won with Whats It To Ya ($10.40) in 1:59.3 for owner-trainer Tammy Collings of Hazel Brook, P.E.I., who doubled on the card from her stable.
