One 'Hill' Of A Debut

Tom Hill is one of many owners getting ready for what could be a big weekend in the Breeders Crown, but before that excitement rolls around he was fortunate to celebrate a Thursday evening score at Woodbine Mohawk Park with first-time starter Baroness Hill.

The Chantal Mitchell-trained Baroness Hill entered her $17,000 assignment with just a set of qualifiers under her belt, but she showed the poise of an experienced performer when she stormed home in :27.4 to post a 1:56.3 decision for driver Louis-Philippe Roy.

Roy was in no hurry with the two-year-old daughter of Kadabra-Secret Passion, who got away sixth from Post 8.  R Hot Toddy scrambled to the top and carved out panels of :27.3, :57.3 and 1:27.3.  Roy had his charge on the move while sitting third over on the way to the three-quarter pole.  He angled the trotting lass to the outside in the lane and she powered home to win by a half-length margin over Muscle Envy in the eye-catching score.  Race favourite Make It Easy was third.

Sent off at odds of 18-1, Baroness Hill made her first down payment on her $260,000 purchase price from last fall’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale.
