After failing to earn a cheque in last week’s $12,000 Preferred #2 Pace at Kawartha Downs, Amazon Art returned to same class on Thursday and took home all the marbles for driver James MacDonald
.
Amazon Art settled into the six-hole from his Post 5 perch on the starting gate, while Dark Prince and Rock Me Amastreos battled to the quarter pole in a :28-second clip. Dark Prince deposited that foe into the two-hole and proceeded to knife out panels of :56.1 and 1:25. He was under pressure in the third quarter from Priceless Edition, and that eventually took its toll on the pacesetter.
Amazon Art, in the meantime, was sitting third over heading into the final quarter of the contest. When MacDonald fed him racetrack in the late stages of the mile the five-year-old son of Artsplace-Can Du River sprinted home in :28.4 to win by 2-3/4 lengths over race favourite Rock Me Amastreos in 1:54.3. Oliver Jackson rounded out the top three finishers in the eight-horse affair.
Randy Van Meer trains the gelding for owner Harry Locke of Oshawa, ON, and together they watched the pacer win for the sixteenth time while pushing his career earnings to $208,400.
