Inverness Raceway wrapped up its 2021 season Monday evening, and fans were treated to an upset special in the evening’s featured affair.
Sent off at odds of 10-1 in the $2,150 ‘winners over’ feature, Dam Lucky went last to first to capture the main event for trainer/driver Ambrose Gillis.
Even-money favourite Betterthanbutter rolled to the top and carved out fractions of :29.1, :58.2 and 1:27.2. Dam Lucky, who commenced a rally on the way to the half, brushed to the lead at the head of the lane and prevailed by a half-length margin over Betterthanbutter in 1:57.1. Windemere Best Man took home third prize.
Dionne Gillis of Strathlorne, NS owns the six-year-old son of Camluck-Machbethslady who won for the third time this season and for the 15th time in his career. He recently surpassed $80,000 in lifetime earnings.
Redmond Doucet tacked on another victory to bring his track-leading total to 33 for the season, and thus earning him the title of top reinsman for 2021 while Donald Beaton’s two-win performance on the curtain-closing card lifted his yearling win total to 16. He bested runner-up James Copley by a trio of victories, and thus took home the title for the year.
