Jailhouse Sam, in rein to Sandy Beatty, scored a mild upset in Thursday’s $17,500 Open Trot at Hollywood Dayton Raceway.
Content to get away seventh in the full field of nine, Beatty moved into sixth as the third horse in the outer flow as the featured square gaiters approached the halfway juncture in :57. With the tempo ramping up Jailhouse Sam managed to improve his position to second-over in fourth as the three quarter station was passed in 1:25.3.
A stretch-long cavalry charge ensued with the winner wresting command in deep stretch, topping Northmedo Mission (Aaron Merriman) and Voyage To Paris (Dan Noble) in 1:55.4.
It was the fourth seasonal triumph for five-year-old Jailhouse Sam who paid $13.40 to win. He is owned by Casey Clemens and has been trained throughout his $310,120 winning career by Beatty.
Driver Kayne Kauffman led all drivers with three rallies on the program. Reinsman Josh Sutton drove both winners in the early daily double which kicked back $26.60.
