Raising Rusty crept up the cones in deep stretch to beat the fatigued Tyrone Bow Tie and capture the $10,000 Preferred Handicap Trot on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at Rideau Carleton Raceway.

Melanie Plourde commanded early speed from Raising Rusty and slotted him into the pocket behind J M Stella (Sylvain Lacaille), who left sharply from the pylon post. Tyrone Bow Tie (Robert Shepherd), a 10-time Rideau Preferred winner this year, rolled out of fourth past the quarter in :28.4 and was alongside J M Stella entering the second turn, but the longshot leader played hardball past the half in :58.2.

The top two slugged it out through three-quarters in 1:27, and it remained anyone’s race as the leading group of four turned for home with favourite Rose Run Why Not (Pascal Berube) second-over and Raising Rusty in the pocket. Tyrone Bow Tie put away J M Stella at the top of the lane, but Raising Rusty slid up the passing lane and rallied past his tired opponent to prevail by a length in 1:57.1. Tyrone Bow Tie stayed game to hold off Rose Run Why Not for second.

Raising Rusty has now won two of his last three starts, all at the Preferred level, and is five-for-27 this season. Stephane Pouliot trains the gelding for 9096 9205 Quebec Inc. of Gloucester, Ont. The eight-year-old son of Kadabra-Raising The Bar has won 31 of his 185 lifetime outings and has earned $255,883. He paid $12.90 to win.
