A pair of Preferred 3 events for horse and geldings pacers went postward Monday at The Raceway at Western Fair District, and a pair of popular horses prevailed.
Racemup, who was sent off as the second choice in the wagering, used come-from-behind tactics for driver Robert Shepherd to win the $9,400 affair which was contested at the distance of 1 1/16 miles.
Boomboom Ballykeel led the way through fractions of :27.2, :56.1 and 1:25.2, and during that time he did battle with the parked out favourite, Adore Him. Boomboom Ballykeel won the battle, but wound up losing the war when Racemup swung off cover and powered away to win by 2-1/2 lengths in 2:02.1. D M Johnwick was next best, while Boomboom Ballykeel faded to finish third.
Victor Puddy trains the four-year-old son of Whatayasay-Logicallyinclined for owners Gordon McDonald and Christopher Boland. The gelding won for the ninth time this season and for the 16th time in his career. He’s closing in on $140,000 in lifetime earnings.
Smooth Mara N went the traditional distance of a mile en route to winning his $8,500 Preferred 3 assignment for Team Hensley.
Ed Hensley rolled the seven-year-old son of Lis Mara-Smooth Asset to the lead from Post 2 and together they led the field through fractions of :28, :58 and 1:26 before kicking home in :29.1 to win by a nose over Officer Jones in 1:55.1. Blue Moose took home the show dough.
Sent off as the even-money favourite, the Ashleigh Hensley trainee improved his 2019 record to 6-4-3 from 30 starts. The win pushed his lifetime earnings over $78,000 for Ed and Ashleigh who own the 15-time winner.
