Blue Star Outlaw, with Jason Hughes, prevailed in an all-out stretch battle to win the Thursday night feature in a time of 1:59.3 at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the
Charlottetown Driving Park.
Blue Star Outlaw, owned by Don MacRae of Vernon Bridge, PEI, sat second behind pacesetter Porthill Alf (Kenny Arsenault) through most of the mile before enduring pressure from the backfield. As the field approached the three-quarter station, Babes Gold (Shane Bernard) came flying on the outside to join the leaders to set up the sprint to the finish. Porthill Alf finished second by a head while Babes Gold finished third.
Flashy Image won the evening’s trot division in gate-to-wire fashion for driver Gary Chappell in 2:03. 2. Katies Victory and Saulsbrook Balance completed the top three.
Stacey Lund trains the five-year-old mare, who was making her 24th start of the season for owners Wilfred and Calvin Smith of Hunter River and Wayne Court of New Glasgow, PEI.
An accident, involving two horses, marred Race 10. OK Chivas (Terry Gallant) and Royal Stewart (Norman Myers) got tangled up going into the first turn. Royal Steward fell while OK Chivas pulled up. Both horses and drivers walked away from the incident.
Live racing returns on Saturday featuring the Blair Andrew Memorial. The Maritime Breeders Final is presented by Meridian Farms. Post time is 7 p.m.
