Trainer Darryl Laver's homebred mare Petro Angel joined the top trotting ranks at Leamington Raceway last week in a runner-up finish and improved to first in take two on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 20.
The only mare in the field of seven facing the gate for this week's $5,200 Preferred 4 Handicap Trot, Petro Angel led the way through panels of :27.4, :58 and 1:28 en route to the 1:59.2 victory. Scott Wray drove the six-year-old Archangel-Sassy Dreamer mare to the two-length triumph over 4-5 favoured Shouldaknownbetter (Lorne House), with Jooner (Robert Doyle) rounding out the top three more than eight lengths behind.
Petro Angel, who now sports a seasonal summary reading 8-9-5 from 36 starts, paid $6.40 to win as the 2-1 second choice. The 24-time career winner is now just shy of the $150,000 earnings mark.
