Typical Newyorker used a new strategy in the $9,000 Open Trot at Batavia Downs Friday night (Oct. 19) and the new tactics paid off resulting in a comfortable two-length victory over Under The Stars in 1:58.4.
Driver Ray Fisher Jr. and Typical Newyorker ($12), scoring from the three post, showed early gate speed and zoomed right to the top -- something not shown in his previous seven starts. After posting a :29.4 first quarter, Fisher Jr. put on the brakes and went the next quarter in :31, a breather that proved to critical in registering the win.
After a half in 1:00.4, Under The Stars (Jim McNeight) was first over at the half with the favoured Big Baller (Dan Noble) taking that cover. But Typical Newyorker wasn't going to be denied as he had plenty left in the tank, going the last half in :58.4. He easily held off any challenge Under The Stars or Big Baller had hoped to mount as neither got any closer than two lengths.
Typical Newyorker, a four-year-old Conway Hall gelding, was trained by John Hallett. The win was Typical Newyorker's fourth of the campaign and increased his seasonal earnings to $33,830.
A 13-race card will be offered on Saturday night at Batavia Downs with the post post scheduled for 6:25 p.m. The seventh race will be the feature as a field of seven will go to the post in the $9,000 Open Pace. Spender Hanover and driver McNeight III were installed as the 5-2 morning line favourite.
Also on Saturday, the final free $1,000 Handicapping Challenge will take place with $500 going to the winner. Entries will be available at the Player's Extra booth starting at 4:30 p.m. The contest will involve the first nine races at Batavia Downs and you must be a Player's Extra card holder, which is also free to join, to enter the contest.
