Trainer Susie Kerwood captured a pair of the five $22,000 conditioned features for two-year-olds as Madigan and Lady Jag won the trotting events at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Thursday, Oct. 1.
Madigan was the quicker of the two as she fired to victory off cover in the lone filly trot division. Louis-Philippe Roy slid her back to sixth while Rowan With Evan (Phil Hudon) progressed to the front and led through a :29 first quarter. Nine To Five (J.R. Plante) tipped out on the backstretch and fished out Ds Addie (Mark MacDonald) from the pocket, then followed that filly until she cleared before pressing on to the top herself passing the half in :59. Madigan then left the inner line and drew Defy Gravity (Trevor Henry) to the outside for cover through three-quarters in 1:28.3, then slid out coming off the corner and stormed down the lane with :27.3 speed home to score in 1:56.4. She drew 3-1/4 lengths clear of Nine To Five, who held second over Defy Gravity.
Madigan broke her maiden in her second start after closing sharply for second a week ago. The homebred daughter of Trixton-Wee Jill has now earned $16,500 for Jeffery Ruch of Innisfil, Ont. She paid $2.70 to win.
Roy opted for the front end with Kerwood’s other winner, Lady Jag, who set the fractions on the way to her second win in eight starts. The Muscle Mass-Jaguara filly glided to the lead from the five-hole with a :28.2 first panel and cruised to the half in :59. She came under fire from Whoopdedoo Hanover (James MacDonald) approaching three-quarters in 1:28.2 but hit the gas to pocket that rival coming off the turn and rolled home to win by 2-1/4 lengths in 1:57.2. If Possible (Steve Hudon) finished evenly for second, followed by a closing Rally Kalle (Scott Young).
Lady Jag has banked $24,907 for M&L of Delaware LLC of Wilmington, Dela. and S&R Racing Stable of Acton, Ont. Thursday’s win lowered her mark attained in her Aug. 14 maiden win by more than two seconds. She returned $4.40 at the mutuels.
Lets Go Fishin ($3.20) took the first $22,000 rookie filly pace co-feature, rattling off the fractions en route to a 1:53 score for driver Mark MacDonald. The daughter of All Bets Off-Fashion Fluzzy is trained by Scott McEneny.
Ruling Monarch ($6.30) was the other pacing filly feature winner with a 1:53.4 mile overseen by J.R. Plante. Chantal Mitchell conditions the All Bets Off-Undefiable miss.
We Want Eazy ($4.70) captured the lone $22,000 event for rookie male pacers, holding on from a stretch challenge for the 1:52.4 victory. Tyler Borth steered the son of Perfect Sting-Passion Hanover for Blake MacIntosh.
