Six-year-old trotting mare Flora Dream was a wire-to-wire winner beating her male counterparts in the featured $14,000 Preferred 2 Trot at Georgian Downs on Saturday
night.
The daughter of Taurus Dream-Klelia took the lead from Post 2 en route to the first quarter in :27.1 forcing the up-and-coming Up Front Ben (Garrett Whelan), who fired from Post 8, to take back into the pocket.
Flora Dream, with Stephen Byron in the bike, then played hard to get as she extended her lead to seven lengths during middle splits of :56 and 1:25.
That lead was just enough, allowing her to coast home for the season’s-best 1:56.1 victory as Chinnys Wings (Doug Bowins) came flying home on the outside to get within a quarter-length of the winner. The popular Ericskarri (Dan Clements) journeyed first up to finish third, one and a half lengths behind.
Flora Dream paid $9.20 to win as the 7-2 second choice in the field of eight. She is conditioned by David Menary for owners Leo Tourigny of Becancour, QC and Lapharmaciedekedgwick Inc. of Kedgwick, N.B. The win was her fifth in 18 starts and lifted her earnings to $46,790. The 19-time career winner now boasts a bankroll totaling $266,638.
