The stallion and accomplished racehorse Captain Kirk will be standing stud in 2024. Captain Kirk will be standing stud in Ohio at Winterwood Farm.
Captain Kirk was destined to be a top colt from the beginning as he was a $200,000 yearling purchase for the Tony Alagna barn. He was able to burst onto the Grand Circuit scene and was then sold to Greg Luther, pacing miles in 1:47 and change and winning the 2021 Roll With Joe Pace at The Meadowlands, where he took his mark of 1:47.4. He competed against the very best in the sport before struggling with an accident/injury, which hampered his racing career. The six-year-old stallion sports a career record reading 11-6-12 from 50 starts with total earnings of $462,582.
Captain Kirk is royally bred, being a Captaintreacherous full brother to Blue Diamond Eyes, who earned more than $1.3 million. He has a pedigree that shows champions on the male and female side which is extremely rare for pacing stallions in the state of Ohio.
Trainer Todd Luther said, “We’ve been involved with a lot of great horses here and Captain Kirk tops the list on heart, size and speed. He has body and muscle tone unlike any horse we’ve ever had. Just go look at him and tell me he’s not the best looking Standardbred you’ve ever seen. We are buying extremely good mares for the sole purpose of breeding to 'Kirk' each year.”
Winterwood Farm has been in the Standardbred industry, supporting the Ohio breeding program since 1974 and to celebrate their 50th year in the sport, is now beginning to stand stallions, starting with Captain Kirk in 2024.
Owner and stallion manager Greg Luther said, “Breeding to Captain Kirk excites me more than anything I’ve ever experienced in harness racing. I’ve waited a long time to have a horse of this caliber and I plan to manage him to make him affordable for all Ohio breeders, but also make sure he has the very best mares so that his offspring dominate at the state level and beyond. Ohio has always had fast stallions, but rarely do you ever see one with a pedigree this strong. Everyone sees how supportive I am of the Catch The Fire foals and if 'Kirk' has foals that look anything like himself, we’ll be setting new sales price records and new race records in the state for sure. I’ve even agreed to a very low introductory stud fee for only the first year so that we can flood the office with mare applications and select the best of the best for the 140 he is permitted to breed. We will then offer a lifetime loyalty bonus to all breeders that supported him the first year.”
Captain Kirk will stand only his first year at a discounted $3,000 stud fee so bookings will fill up very quickly. Syndication is underway with a limited number of lifetime breeding shares and only 11 of those shares are remaining as of this morning. To submit your mare or for information on the remaining lifetime breeding shares, contact Greg Luther directly at 614-582-9860 or Winterwood Farm at 419-564-2922 via call or text message.
