A set of Preferred events were contested Monday evening at The Raceway at Western Fair District, and in both instances the favourites failed to deliver.

Sir Machalot posted a 6-1 upset in the $7,500 Horses & Geldings Preferred 3. Kelly Sheppard rallied the five-year-old son of Mach Three-The Apprentice gelding to the win by 3-1/4 lengths over Red The Raider in 1:56. Bolero Trisco took home third prize.

Lyle MacArthur trains Sir Machalot for owner Linda Wellwood of St. George Brant, ON. It was the pacer’s fifth win of the season and the 10th win of his career. He’s banked more than $74,000 to date.

Thundering Ovation went to the front and didn’t look back en route to capturing the $7,500 Preferred 3 for trotters. Paul MacKenzie hustled the mare through fractions of :28.1, :58.4 and 1:28.2 before using a :30.4 kicker to win by 2-1/2 lengths over O U Sexy Guy in 1:59.1. A Nashty Business grabbed the show dough.

Sent off at odds of 7-2, Thundering Ovation improved her 2015 record to 7-6-1 from 18 starts with the win for trainer Gerry Sloan. The homebred has banked more than $280,000 for owners Joanne and Courtney Sloan of Harley, ON.
