Warrens Charm produced an impressive final kick to win the $154,930 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund (DSBF) Final for two-year-old pacing fillies at Harrington Raceway on Tuesday, Oct. 14.
The Hes Watching-Azure Deo filly tucked in third early from post seven for Art Stafford Jr. and remained on the cones through :29 and :57.4 splits before pressing leader Burlesque Belle (Corey Callahan) at three-quarters in 1:27. After a brief battle, Warrens Charm soared clear of the field to win by 5-1/2 lengths for a 6-1 upset in 1:55.4. Burlesque Belle held second over Sucha Sporty Girl (Jason Green). Favourites Odds On Put Option (Tim Tetrick) and Just Applause (Montrell Teague) both went off stride early in the mile.
Warrens Charm notched her fourth win in five career starts for Jason Skinner, who trains the filly and co-owns her with Rodney Wyatt. She has earned $102,291. Her backers received $14.80.
Broadkill Beauty ($13.20) took the $28,169 DSBF Consolation for rookie pacing fillies, pocket-riding to a 1:57.4 victory by 1-3/4 lengths for driver Allan Davis, trainer Jim King Jr. and owner/breeder Jeffrey Marsh.
Bob Shahan's Jett Propelled ($34.60) upset in the $25,352 Fillies and Mares Open Handicap Pace in 1:53. Square Deal (Tony Morgan) took the lead from Jett Propelled (Jason Thompson) past the opening quarter in :27.2, and Jett Propelled sat in the pocket to the half in :55.4 with Huntress (Davis) heading the outer flow first-over past that point. Huntress applied stout pressure to three-quarters in 1:24.3 and edged clear of Square Deal as they battled through the final turn, while Melody Hanover (Ross Wolfenden) gathered momentum three-wide. Jett Propelled, however, surged down the passing lane and out-kicked Melody Hanover to the finish to win by a half-length. Huntress held third.
Jett Propelled, a four-year-old Roddys Bags Again-Jett Away mare, has now won three times in 26 starts this season for owner-trainer Shahan. The mile came with a new lifetime mark for Jett Propelled, a DSBF graduate and winner of 15 races lifetime with $440,996 earned in 56 starts.
The eighth race featured a group of female drivers competing for charity in the Pink Pace. The drivers graciously donated their earnings from the race to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, a local charity which aims to increase breast cancer awareness. Leslie Joyce won the race with Mad Anne ($28.20) in 1:59 for owner/trainer Elizabeth Shockley.
Trainer Joe Columbo sent out a trio of winners on the 15-race card. His victorious trainees were Gogettermisscheddr ($7.80), Sweet Violets ($3.20), and Hold My Wine ($4). The triple for the track's leading conditioner extended his lead over second-placed Joe Hundertpfund to 17.
Lil Miss Wondrphyl ($4) continued her winning ways on the card, taking her sixth consecutive victory for trainer Dylan Davis and owner Mike Casalino Jr. The three-year-old daughter of Control The Moment-Bath Beach, piloted by Callahan, stopped the clock in 1:54.2 in a 1-3/4-length victory. She is now six-for-eight in her debut season.
