A compact group of five lined up to contest Monday’s $2,600 feature race at Summerside Raceway, and there was no touching race favourite Heart And Soul who rolled to an easy triumph in gate-to-wire fashion.
With Jason Hughes barking out orders from the bike, Heart And Soul powered to the lead from Post 5 and proceeded to lead the field through fractions of :28, :57.4 and 1:28.1 before using a :28.4 closing panel to secure the win by 4-3/4 lengths over Melanies Magic in 1:57. Taking home the show dough was Flash In The Pang.
Sent off as the 2-5 favourite, Heart And Soul registered his sixth win of the season from 16 starts for trainer George Riley. The Riley Farms Ltd’s homebred is now a 31-time winner to date. The seven-year-old son of Western Paradise-Mighty Sassy pushed his lifetime earnings over $110,000 with the win.
In a touching family moment, driver Robert Chappell put together an upset score to win his great-uncle Lester Chappell’s Memorial race.
Shes A Lover was first to the lead in the Chappell Memorial and cruised through the mile for a 2:01.2 score at 11-1 odds. Robert Chappell of Summerside owns, trains and drives the daughter of Proven Lover.
