Rookies were the stars of the show during Thursday evening’s 12-race card at the Charlottetown Driving Park, as the half-mile oval featured $2,500 events for Lady Slipper and O’Brien eligible pacers.
The Devils Cut was a powerhouse winner in the $2,500 event for Lady Slipper eligibles. The two-year-old daughter of Malicious-A Teddy A Shine got away fourth for driver David Dowling before going first-over on the way to the half. The filly opened up a big lead in the backstretch and rolled by the three-quarter pole in 1:32.3. She only needed a :31.3 closing quarter to win by 7-1/2 lengths over the free-legged Howmac Margarita in 2:04.1. Elm Grove Nanci rounded out the Trifecta ticket.
Chris MacKay of French River, PE owns and trains the youngster who pushed her earnings to $2,982 with the maiden-breaking performance.
Westward Whim used a similar tactical approach to win the $2,500 event for O’Brien eligible two-year-old colt and gelding pacers.
Corey MacPherson got away fourth and held that position to the half with the son of Westwardho Hanover-Oceanview Bonnie. MacPherson swung to the outside in the backstretch to pick up late cover for his charge, who then used a :29.3 kick on the end of the mile to win by a length over Oceanview Helios in 2:06.1. J J Superman took home the show dough.
John Clarey trains the freshman for owner Michael Clarey of Montague, PE. It was a maiden-breaking score for the career winner of $1,790.
