Trevor Williams trainee Northfield Nellie took over the lead off the final turn and held off a late challenge from Hurry Home to win the $2,950 Fillies & Mares Open Handicap Pace at Marquis Downs on Saturday (Oct. 9).
Rustys Flying set the tempo to a :27 first quarter and a :57 half with Triple Action sitting second and Northfield Nellie third. Driver Glenn Le Drew moved Northfield Nellie out of third moving toward three-quarters in 1:27 and downed pacesetter and stablemate Rustys Flying off the final turn. Through the stretch, Northfield Nellie just had to withstand a late charge from Hurry Home, who settled for second by a neck in the 1:58 mile. Outlaw Tootsieroll took third and Rustys Flying faded to fourth.
A homebred by J. David Mooney, Northfield Nellie won her fourth race from 13 starts this season and her 24th from 95 overall, pushing her earnings to $116,148. The six-year-old Mystery Chase mare paid $9.50 to win.
