'Late Bloomers' Upset At Sudbury

The Late Boomer Series kicked off with four upsets in each $7,500 division at Sudbury Downs on Saturday

. The series is for non-winners of one race or $15,000 lifetime (fillies and mares $22,500 lifetime).

Until Now, a three-year-old daughter of Bo Knows Jate-Ember, rallied from last to first for a 22-1 upset in the opening division for trainer, driver and owner Jason Ryan. The 2:00.2 victory was her second (consecutive) in 26 lifetime starts. First over Nobles Grin (Mike Noble), the 1-2 favourite, finished a half-length behind in second and pacesetter Fish Semalu (David Dowling) finished right there in third.

Cameo Pin was a wire-to-wire winner in the next division, stopping the clock in 2:00.4 with Gerry Belanger in the bike. The popular Perhaps Today (Allan Hohner) finished two lengths behind off a pocket trip and Sharkey Oshea (Justin Turcotte) finished third. The four-year-old Cambest-Lady Bird mare, sent postward as the 6-1 fourth choice, is trained by James Belanger for Shanel Belanger of Azilda, Ont. The win was her second in 12 starts.

Bettor B Slick rallied off second over cover and kicked away by seven and three-quarter lengths for a 10-1 upset in 2:00.2. Mike MacNeill drove the four-year-old gelded son of Bettors Delight-Sand Slicorice to his second win in 11 starts for trainer Philippe Belanger and owner James Fraleigh of Dresden, Ont. Zip By (David Dowling) and Fuzzy Cupid (Justin Turcotte) rounded out the top three. Race favourite Cinema Classic (Mario Rivest) broke stride early on and pulled up.

Another Cowgirl was a gate-to-wire winner in the last division for driver Mike Nobel, trainer George Jarrell and owner Mary Deluca of Sault Ste Marie, Ont. The three-year-old Hawaiian Cowboy-Whispering Winds filly, a 9-1 shot, won by a length in 2:02.2 over favourite Mystic Arrow (Richard Baker) and pocket-sitter Seshjuan Style (Mike MacNeill). She earned her second win in 18 lifetime starts.
