Truro Raceway has announced it will be hosting a very special race day during its 2024 harness racing meet honouring the former Sackville Downs, which was in operation from 1955 to 1986.
The event is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 15 with lots of festivities to recognize its rich history.
Truro Raceway is putting together an organizing committee, which will manage the event. The festivities are expected to include a large display of memorabilia and mementos from the former Sackville Downs, a race with all former Sackville Downs drivers participating and sponsored races honouring individuals formerly connected to Sackville Downs.
“We’re pleased to be able to honour a racetrack that meant a great deal to people in our region and across the Maritimes," said Steve Fitzsimmons, Truro Raceway's General Manager. "There is no doubt that people have fond recollections of the former Sackville Downs and miss its presence in the HRM [Halifax Regional Municipality] region. We’re looking forward to remembering the many good times and people of that time.”
If anyone has artifacts or memorabilia that they would be willing to loan to the committee to put on display for the event, please contact [email protected].
Truro Raceway's 2024 season is scheduled to begin on Sunday, May 19.
