Southwind Farms of Pennington, New Jersey, home to World Champion trotters Muscle Hill and Chocolatier, announced today that it has acquired an interest in World Champion Sportswriter p,2,1:49.2 ($875,411) from owners Steve Calhoun and West Wins Stable

(Casie Coleman, Ross Warriner, Zoltan Kovacs) for an undisclosed amount.

Sportswriter became the fastest two-year-old pacer of all time when he won the $1 million Metro Pace at Mohawk Racetrack on September 5, 2009 in 1:49.2. His other stakes wins include the Champlain and Nassagaweya Stakes. In all, he won seven of eight starts, with one second-place finish, that being his final start of the year in the Breeders Crown, where he battled All Speed Hanover the length of the stretch before dropping a nose decision. Sportswriter was recently named the Dan Patch Award winner as Two-Year-Old Colt Pacer of the Year by the United States Harness Writers Association.

A son of Artsplace – Precious Beauty, Sportswriter will continue in the care of Casie Coleman and has recently resumed jogging. An ambitious stakes schedule is planned for 2010, with the North America Cup, Meadowlands Pace, Little Brown Jug, and Breeders Crown among his targets.

“We are very pleased to be partnering with Steve, Casie, Ross and Zoltan. Being a son of Artsplace and from his last crop, we at Southwind thought it was a natural fit for our program," said Allen Skolnick of Southwind Farms. "When we inspected the horse and found that he was a mirror image of his sire, we decided to invest in his future. We are looking forward to a very successful racing campaign in 2010.”
