The Raceway at Western Fair District paid tribute to longtime fan favourite Stonebridge Scout during a special retirement ceremony on Friday evening.

The pacer, known for his flashy looks, had been scheduled to make his final career start on New Year’s Eve at the London, Ont. oval, however, the card was cancelled due to weather.

A large entourage, including owner Gladys McCarty of London, Ont., was on hand Friday to celebrate with the gelding, who was honoured during a trackside presentation before leading the post parade with regular driver Scott Wray for the night’s fourth race.

Stonebridge Scout ended his 14th year with a career summary of 28-42-43 from 342 starts and a little over $196,000 in earnings. His career-best clocking of 1:55.2 came at age eight and this past season he was just one-fifth of a second off that personal best when he clicked in 1:55.3 at London in May in the Ontario Regional Driving Championship.

Live harness racing resumes at The Raceway this Monday evening at 5:50 p.m. Horsepeople are reminded that the annual awards night will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Top Of The Fair dining room. The 2022 award winners, along with ticket details, will be announced next week.
