Driver Robert Shepherd dominated the program on Sunday, Jan. 6 at Flamboro Downs by winning six races, including both features, on the 11-race card.
Shepherd started his six pack with a wire-to-wire score behind Deetzy in the $11,500 Preferred 2 Pace. The seven-year-old Jeremes Jet gelding led unchallenged through fractions of :27.2, :57.2 and 1:25.4 before edging to a two-and-three-quarter length victory as the odds-on favourite.
Winning his 24th race from 152 and earning $403,754, Deetzy races for Holland Racing Stable and is trained by Dave Menary. He paid $2.90 to win.
Later in the card Tero gave Shepherd a sweep of the features when he rallied wide to overtake horses late and win the $8,500 Preferred 3 Pace in 1:57.
Wild Bill M set the pace early while prompted by Buckshot Austin to his outside as he left the gate from post eight but failed to get to the pylons. The two dueled through a :28.2 opening quarter and a :58.1 half before Buckshot Austin began to falter.
Tero tipped out of sixth moving towards the backstretch and tracked a blitz by Lets Wait And See passing three-quarters in 1:27.2. Lets Wait And See overtook Wild Bill M entering the stretch but could not hold off Tero and the seven-year-old Western Terror gelding surged to a length-and-a-quarter victory. Uf Bettors Hanover, off a pocket trip, took third.
Owned and trained by David Frey, Tero won his 18th race from 160 starts, earning $149,431. He paid $11.20 to win.
Shepherd's other wins on the card came with Mister Godro ($17.40), who powered first over to a neck victory in 1:56.1 to take a $6,800 conditioned claiming pace; Domition Hall ($3.50), who blew to a five-and-a-half length victory in 2:01.1 to take a $5,200 claiming trot; Machsnotafraide ($24.20), who ground uncovered to a three-length win in 1:57.4 to take a $5,600 conditioned claiming pace; and Rebel Voyager ($3.70), who won a $5,200 conditioned pace going wire to wire in 1:57.3.
