Among Rideau Carleton Raceway's leading horsemen last season, trainer Jamie Copley continued the trend into the New Year with a grand slam during Sunday's 15-race card.
Copley didn't have to wait long for his wins on Sunday. Six-year-old trotter Seagram ($5.60) romped to a 1:59.1 score in the opener for Copley and 13-year-old trotter Abundaspin ($2.50) was victorious in the third race in 2:02.4 -- both with a winning margin of over five lengths. In the next dash, four-year-old pacer Well Done Hanover ($3.10) equalled his 1:58.2 lifetime mark, winning for the fifth time in a row, by nearly two lengths. Eight-year-old Summerhill Charles ($4.30) later trotted to a two and a half length tally, his 20th lifetime, in 2:01.4 in the 12th race.
Copley sent out 175 winners at Rideau last season to rank second on the local leaderboard. His 2013 win total rose to six following the third card of racing at the Ottawa oval this year.
Stephane Gendron drove all four of Copley's Sunday winners. Following a triumphant weekend of racing at The Meadowlands in New Jersey, John MacDonald returned to his home track where he also drove four winners.
