Hasty Bid seized the Woodbine Mohawk Park overnight trotting crown in the first edition of the $40,000 Open Trot of 2026, charging from fourth entering the lane to score in a photo finish on Sunday, Jan. 4.
James MacDonald slotted Hasty Bid in behind outside leaver Sid The Kid (Doug McNair) on the way to the first turn, getting the two-hole trip past the quarter in :27.1. New Rules (Travis Henry) relegated him to third as he made good on his uncovered advance, reaching the lead just prior to the midway mark in :56.1 after a tough first-half grind.
Usain Hanover rocketed up on the outside for Jody Jamieson entering the final turn and put pressure on New Rules to three-quarters in 1:23.4, with MacDonald keeping Hasty Bid on the cones into the lane. Still fourth at the eighth pole, Hasty Bid gathered steam and gave chase to New Rules, who had put away Usain Hanover with a 1/16th of a mile left. New Rules stayed game throughout, but Hasty Bid nabbed him in the last strides to win by a head in 1:53.2. Safe Conduct (Chris Christoforou) charged for third.
Hasty Bid has won two of his last three starts, including his first career Open win on Nov. 30. The six-year-old My Mvp-Sunshinenlollipops gelding, trained by Paige MacDonald, now has 11 victories and $812,194 in his coffers through 55 career outings. Paige MacDonald shares ownership with 1000063663 Ontario Inc. of Guelph, Ont. The winner returned $8.90 at the windows.
