Sea Silk Named Top Ohio Freshman Filly

For the second straight year, Ohio’s Two-Year-Old Pacing Filly of the Year made sure there was no doubt who the best freshman filly was, setting a world record and winning the Ohio Triple Crown. Sea Silk dominated her competition on the way to being named the 2021 Ohio Two-Year-Old Pacing Filly of the Year.

A daughter of Downbytheseaside out of Silk Purse, Sea Silk won nine of 11 races for trainer Ron Burke and owners Burke Racing Stable, Knox Services, Weaver Bruscemi LLC, and Hatfield Stables, earning $584,092 in 2021.

Sea Silk captured the Ohio Triple Crown by winning the $300,000 Ohio Sire Stakes final, the Ohio Fair Stakes, and the Ohio Breeders Championship. She set a world record at MGM Northfield Park in the Sire Stakes final winning in 1:51.1 and becoming the fastest two-year-old in history on a half-mile track.

Chris Page was behind Sea Silk for all of her starts and said he was confident every time he drove her.

“She is big for a two-year-old pacing filly with a quick turn of foot and could go from zero to a hundred in two steps,” said Page, adding she is a big horse with a big gait and that’s a lethal combination against other fillies.

Sea Silk will be honoured at the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association Annual Awards Banquet on January 15, at the Hilton Columbus-Polaris in Columbus, Ohio.
