Western Fair's 2010 Opener

The first 2010 program at Western Fair Raceway kicks off today with a 12 race program getting underway at 3:35 p.m. The card is sprinkled with Preferred events on both gaits with the

trotters featured in races four and seven and the pacers in races three and 11.

In the latter event The Steelman will be looking for his third consecutive victory at the half-mile track and first of 2010. The six-year-old Blissfull Hall gelding won the Preferred Pace on Boxing Day over an off track. Robert Shepherd will be at the lines for trainer Terry Deters and owners Steel A Mile LLC of Michigan.

Doug McNair, who concluded 2009 as the top driver by wins at Western Fair, has nine drives on the program to begin adding to his 2010 numbers. He concluded last year with a total of 223 victories at Western Fair, 42 ahead of Brad Forward who topped his young rival in the money won category however with $1,366,585 earned at the London track versus McNair’s $1,279,004.

On the training side, Paul Taylor led the way in wins with 55 to Dean Wall’s 29 and Dan Creighton’s 28. In terms of money won, two time O’Brien Award winner Casie Coleman narrowly edged Taylor with $274,208 versus $271,670.

Western Fair reminds participants, patrons and fans of the new schedule for the winter meet which sees live harness racing from January to April four days per week, Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays with a 3:35 p.m. post time and Fridays at 7:05 p.m.
