A second-tier draw while stepping up in class was no problem for Angel Fly Away, who won her second straight race in the $9,500 conditioned feature trot on Thursday, Jan. 29 at Flamboro Downs.
The mare was rough-gaited behind the car but recovered to catch the back of Tencaratgold (Scott Coulter) and secure a four-hole trip. Inside starter Stovid (Brady Galliers) ceded control to Tricky Trish (Travis Cullen) at the quarter in :29 but circled right back to the lead on the second turn. Bert Renaud pulled Angel Fly Away out after the midway mark in :58.1, keeping her on the cover of Tencaratgold to three-quarters in 1:28.3 before making a three-wide move.
Four horses charged after Stovid down the lane, with Tricky Trish aiming up the pylons, Angel Fly Away leading the charge on the outside, Darkness Cooks (Austin Sorrie) weaving through traffic, and Kenogami Mat (Samuel Fillion) rallying widest of all. Angel Fly Away surged to pass the leader late and reach home first by a head over Kenogami Mat, who nabbed second over Darkness Cooks.
Angel Fly Away, a homebred for Len Gamble of Etobicoke, Ont., has now won six times and earned $36,015 in 28 lifetime starts. Julie Walker trains the four-year-old daughter of Archangel-Pine Knolls. The winner paid $22.50 as the 10-1 fifth choice.
