The uncertain future of horseracing in Quebec has led to major contraction in the breeding industry, with the stallion numbers down sharply

Only 42 stallions were registered with the Regie des Alcools, Courses et Jeux for the 2009 breeding season as of the first deadline of Jan. 15. While registrations are accepted as late as June 15, the cost goes up to $500 from $50 for those who miss the early deadline.
Last year, a total of 82 standardbreds were registered for stud duty in Quebec. Several of the most high-profile, among them Shanghai Phil, Justice Hall and Incredible Abe, have since departed.
Alain Vallieres, head of the breeders' association SPECSQ, told a recent court hearing in Montreal the 2009 breeding season is shaping up as complete washout because of the lack of a sires-stake program and limited purses and racing opportunities in the province.
"Breeding (in Quebec) is in the process of being wiped out," he told the court.
